Xiaohe Park, located in Gongshu District, Hangzhou, was transformed from the Xiaohe Oil Depot, originally built in the 1950s. In 2019, a renovation project was launched with the goal of transforming this former industrial site into a renewed cultural and historical heritage hub that integrates into local citizens' daily lives. The design team preserved four old warehouses and three oil tanks, repurposing them into a theater, event spaces, shops, and landscape installations. Additionally, new underground parking, ancillary facilities, and outdoor landscape designs were introduced. The park covers a total land area of 49,387 square meters.
The project site is adjacent to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, bordered on the west, south, and north by a dense network of residential buildings and neighborhoods. The surrounding urban interface is relatively outdated, with fragmented space fabric. Furthermore, the former oil depot site occupied a prominent location along the canal, blocking the pedestrian walkway along the west bank and preventing it from being fully connected. The design team's concept was to "weave the city" by integrating the original textures of the historical buildings, opening up the canal walkway, creating spatial nodes responsive to the local context, and introducing new functions. The team built a cohesive framework while introducing the concept of a "net" to create a "cloud canopy." The finely crafted ETFE grid canopy minimizes artificial intervention, connecting all the buildings while extending outward to invite visitors from all directions into the space. The design also reimagines the connection between the park and the city, linking the oil tanks and warehouses, blending the old with the new, water with land, and ultimately integrating the park into the broader urban environment.
"The protection and transformation of historical buildings and their sites must be organically aligned with the economic development of urban society, considering the relevant factors at both the site and urban scale." From Xiaohe Oil Depot to Xiaohe Park, this project exemplifies this approach to urban renewal.
