The “Sky Ring” is an innovative meteorological installation designed as both a functional weather forecasting tool and a distinctive cultural landmark for Xia Yabai Village. In a community where daily activities such as mountain viewing, camping, hiking, and agricultural work are closely tied to weather conditions, the Sky Ring offers a visually striking solution that communicates weather changes on multiple levels.
Centrally located on a hillside adjacent to the parking area and nestled among terraced tea fields, the installation serves as a natural gathering point for both locals and visitors. Its dramatic placement, with layered tea terraces as a stage and nineteen mountain peaks in the background, not only enhances the scenic beauty but also facilitates a shared public space for diverse outdoor activities.
At its core, the Sky Ring is an advanced air retention system featuring a ring-shaped helium balloon with a 30-meter outer diameter and a 5.5-meter inner diameter. When wind speeds are below 8 m/s, the structure ascends to a 25-meter tethered height using 16 evenly distributed anchor ropes. In adverse weather conditions—such as winds above 8 m/s, rain, hail, or thunderstorms—the system intelligently activates a winch mechanism on four of its outer tethers, securing the installation by anchoring it more firmly with additional support, thereby enhancing its stability and safety.
Illuminated by 33 strategically positioned RGBW LED lights, the Sky Ring transforms the nightscape with dynamic, vibrant colors that energize the rural environment. Constructed from multilayer laminated composite materials, the installation achieves an optimal balance of lightweight design, durability, and weather resistance. This fusion of cutting-edge technology with local cultural elements redefines the traditional weather balloon, establishing the Sky Ring as a beacon of innovation and community engagement.
