Encincal Park redefines the suburban workplace landscape by integrating ecology, technology, and human interaction into a seamless and forward-thinking design. This transformative project converted an outdated parking lot into a dynamic, high-performance landscape that fosters biodiversity, promotes community engagement, and enhances the workplace experience.
The site features a variety of outdoor spaces that encourage gathering, recreation, and quiet reflection, all while seamlessly integrating natural systems. A central boardwalk floats above a 35,000-square-foot meadow, providing universal access to a biodiverse habitat while serving as a focal point for the campus. The meadow plays a crucial role in the site’s ecological infrastructure, collecting and treating stormwater through a series of bioretention cells that mitigate runoff and enhance water quality.
One of the project’s key innovations is its integrated water management system. Condensate water from the campus’s air handling units is captured and repurposed for irrigation, reducing the demand for potable water and supporting the health of native plantings and a mature shade canopy. This system functions in tandem with stormwater capture and treatment, further advancing the project’s sustainability goals.
The landscape prioritizes habitat creation through diverse plantings that span from upland dry zones to wetter bioretention areas, mimicking the complexity of local ecosystems. These habitat zones provide shelter and food for migratory birds, pollinators, and other wildlife while offering a restorative natural environment for campus users.
Breaking from the traditional model of closed-off corporate campuses, Encincal Park remains open and welcoming to the broader community. By integrating ecological and social objectives, the design team has created an adaptive and resilient landscape that serves as a model for future workplace environments.
