Innovative solutions are achieved through a collaborative team process. In this remodel of the Los Angeles offices of engineering firm Thornton Tomessti, informal meeting spaces and configuration of workstations were organized to facilitate a collaborative working style. Key strategies included limiting height of dividing partitions, nesting of group meeting areas to strengthen team work, and adding a window seat/storage unit that runs the length of the studio and yields an informal opportunity for interaction. Color was used boldly to organize the space and direct work-flow in the various open and partitioned areas.
The client was also keen on celebrating the creativity and ingenuity that "good" structural engineering offers. Initially directed at establishing a creative culture to attract and maintain staff, this interest expanded into a marketing strategy that would appeal to clients. The cantilevered reception desk and playful logo mural made of rebar safety caps set the tone while oversized pivot doors, exposed ceilings, daylighting and workspace configuration consolidate an inviting first impression.
