The Huawei Shanghai campus is a technologically advanced workplace that fosters communication across the various research, development and business departments. With a total building area of over 300,000 sm, the campus takes advantage of the relatively long and narrow dimensions of its site to create a low- rise workplace that engages a new landscape and capitalizes on the broad south orientation. To reduce the overall length of the buildings, the site plan organizes the R&D program into two linear wings of linked five story buildings, organized around atria and attached to a central administrative hub.
Planned to accommodate 7,500 employees, the interiors are divided into open-office work plans and closed laboratories. To maximize flexibility and anticipate future change in research and technology, the floor plate modules are designed as a series of 18-by-9-meter structural bays.  Multiple parking levels below each of the R&D buildings accommodate parking for 3000 vehicles.
The building’s double wall glass skin features integral solar louvers which are connected to automatic sensor controls that modulate the quality of light into the predominately computer based workspaces. The double wall reduces thermal loads on building by creating a thermal barrier next to the inner lite of glass, which was carefully selected to balance thermal comfort with views and glare reduction. The windows are operable for natural ventilation, smoke exhaust, and cleaning. The 18m wide galleria are passively cooled/heated from office exhaust, and provide abundant daylighting while reducing lighting loads to the research functions lining the atrium. Water gardens and bamboo groves create a soft, naturalistic setting for the spine of the complex, while precast concrete roof elements enclose MEP functions, provide lateral stability, incorporate sun protection for the exterior glazing, and unify the multiple buildings.
