Within a densely wooded property overlooking a protected natural preserve, ODA was commissioned to design a private house to take full advantage of the site’s open views. ODA proposed a glass & steel house nestled within the contours of the natural landscape of rock outcroppings and trees. The design is organized along two massive stonewalls & two pools of water arranged perpendicularly to one another, these define the programmatic public & private zones. The walls also frame the views and create privacy. Space is captured in glass volumes flanking these stone walls. A double height living room cantilevers over the rocky ridge creates the illusion of being amongst the trees. Wood screens shelter from the sun’s rays while solar panels capture its power. The entrance is situated at the intersection of the two stone walls. This glass-floored box floating over the reflecting pool consciously compresses the entrance experience before revealing the expansiveness of the house. collapse
