About James Corner Field Operations
James Corner Field Operations is a leading-edge landscape architecture and urban design practice based in New York City. Serving an international clientele, the practice is renowned for strong contemporary design across a variety of high-profile project types and scales. Major projects include the design of the High Line, New York City; Fresh Kills Park, Staten Island; the pool deck and gardens of City Center, Las Vegas; Lake Ontario Park, Toronto; Shelby Farms Park, Memphis; The Race Street Pier, Philadelphia; Santa Monica Civic Center Parks, Santa Monica; the San Juan Knowledge Corridor, Puerto Rico; Qianhai Water City, China; and the Central Waterfront, Seattle.
Comprising 35 professionals, many with cross-disciplinary backgrounds in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and communication art, our mandate is to create intelligent, high-quality design solutions for cities, landscapes and public spaces.
Our project types include: entire sectors of cities, intimate garden spaces, large public parks and urban spaces, housing and mixed use developments, the reclamation of landfills, brownfields and other post-industrial landscapes for new public uses and private development, and preservation of large-scale natural resources.
The range in project types in our portfolio is a direct function of our ability to think strategically in terms of ecology, economics, and programming, and tactically in terms of physical design and spatial definition. We continually re-calibrate our design processes to reflect the nuances and intricacies of the local environment. As a matter of course, we pay particular attention to the relationship between mobility infrastructures like pedestrian networks and transit systems, public open spaces and civic venues, as well as the financial and ecological sustainability of a project. We believe that only by considering the full range of systems comprising a site’s ecology can a truly productive and fertile environment emerge.
The work of James Corner and field operations has been recognized by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum as the recipient of the 2010 National Design Award, by the New York City Arts Commission Award for Excellence in Design; the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Design; the Daimler-Chrysler Award for Design Innovation; the Architectural League of New York Design Award; and other professional design awards and prizes. Our work has been published and exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale; the Lisbon Triennale; ArchiLAB, Paris; the Royal College of Art, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum.
