Interested In Israeli Architecture? You Want To Win This Book!

March 6, 2013

All you book lovers out there, listen up: We’re giving away five copies of Aircraft Carrier, a handsome catalogue produced in conjunction with a new exhibition at NYC’s Storefront for Art and Architecture. Contrary to what you might think, this intriguing show has nothing to do with warships. Rather, it explores Israel’s architectural evolution over the past three decades as capitalism has taken hold, a development spurred by US involvement in the country tracing back to 1973. The exhibition’s curious name refers to a comment by former U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig, who once called Israel “the largest American aircraft carrier in the world.” Keep reading!

The Future Of Online Storefronts? Interiors Made (Almost) Entirely Of Shipping Boxes

February 14, 2013

Stores that sell a service rather than a good inevitably face a problem when it comes to interior design. Leasing offices and cell-phone carriers, with their pretend-helpful signage and giant carpeted voids devoted to standing in line, have certainly not found a solution. But in the Basque city of San Sebastián, the architects at VAUMM turned the theme of online shopping into a playful interior motif. Shoppers who have ordered from the website Deskontalia—which, as far is we can tell, is like a Spanish version of Hammacher Schlemmer crossed with a daily deals site—can pick up their goods in a thematically appropriate cardboard jungle. Read more!

Critical Halloween: I Don’t Think I Know What A Metaphor Is…

November 2, 2012

Ken Farmer as The Ghost of Eva Franch

It’s been a pretty scary week here in New York City, what with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy and Halloween. On Monday we posted a wrap-up of the last Saturday’s annual Storefront for Art & Architecture’s Critical Halloween party, that was packed with plenty of spooky costumes and wicked GIFs.

The theme of this year’s event was a toughy, to say the least! Guests were tasked with creating costumes around the idea of “Metaphor”, a theme that left our office wracking our brains for days. In the end, 6 of the 7 ‘Door’ Awards were handed out at the party, including one to the Architizer staff for our group costume “Architecture Blows”. (We didn’t realize we would be so topical, with Sandy lockdown beginning the following day.) The final prize will be awarded to the winner of the online competition that is currently being hosted on Domus.

Storefront Throws A Wicked Halloween Party!

October 29, 2012

When it comes to U.S. holidays, Halloween reigns supreme. And when it comes to Halloween parties, nothing surpasses the annual bash thrown by NYC’s Storefront for Art & Architecture. This year, the organization hosted its much-anticipated “Critical Halloween” soiree at The Autumn Bowl, a century-old factory in Brooklyn converted into an awesome event space. Attendees were asked to devise a costume around the idea of “metaphor” (no pressure!). Click through to see what they brewed up, and look for more coverage on Storefront’s website in the coming days.

Announcing The Launch Of GE Garages Making Things Competition! Win $20k To Design And Build Storefront Installation

September 6, 2012

The advent of the digital and its rapid integration in contemporary life–where everything is within arm’s reach, eager to be activated with even the most inadvertent swipe of a finger–has simultaneously facilitated and distanced us from developing a new notion of craft. Today we are living through a democratization of machines that sees the public at large in constant contact and exchange with their gadgets. Still, aside from a host of portable and non-portable devices are our disposal, much of this machinery remains out of reach for the majority of us, including, unsurprisingly, designers. Access to toys such as 3D printers, a CNC mill, or even just a laser-cutter remains elusive, unless you’re enrolled in an (expensive) architecture/design program or happen to be employed at a relatively large, tech-leaning firm. Which is why GE “Garages”, a “mobile manufacturing lab”, is so cool.

GE Garages brings rapid prototype machines and manufacturing processes to the street. Architects and designers, tinkerers and inventors are all invited to join and play around with the equipment for free. The “Garages” also host collaborative workshops, tutorials, and lectures for participants who are new to the world of digital fabrication or for those who simply want to expand their skill set. The pop-up also features a small store with “curated merchandise” that customers can put together at home. Sounds great, right? Well, GE Garages is on its way to New York (!), and they want give you $20,000 to design the face of its new storefront presence.

The pop-up will be housed in STORY, a Chelsea-based retail space which operates with the “point of view of a magazine, changes like a gallery, and sells things like a store”, meaning that a  new retailer literally pops-up inside every 4-6 weeks. GE & STORY are partnering for the GE Garages Making Things Competition to find an architect/design to design and build a window installation that will greet crowds when the store opens October 5. That’s a little less than a month from now, meaning you’ve got to act fast!

Entries are due September 20, with the winner announced on September 24. In keeping with the project theme, the designs must incorporate some form of rapid prototyping, be it 3D printing, milling, or evne using an injection molder. The fabrication will start immediately thereafter and continue up until the installation deadline, October 4. Not only will the winner receive a highly-publicized commission, but will get $20,000 to make it happen. Submissions are free and open to all. Get to work!

From Record Store to Mushroom Farm

February 23, 2012

Olson Kundig Architects’ [storefront], Seattle’s homegrown gallery for urban experimentation, has been overhauled once again. Last month, it was a music lover’s haven, rekindling the cultural narratives of the world’s fast-disappearing record stores by inviting visitors to browse through neatly filed vinyl collections and stage listening parties. Their latest experiment takes advantage of the city’s thriving coffee culture, taking the form of an indoor mushroom farm nourished by nutrient-rich coffee grounds salvaged by local baristas. Apple Set To Open Nearly Invisible Store In South Of France

January 19, 2012

Photos via AixEnProvence.fr

Can you see it? That there is the latest and greatest Apple store, which promises to bring the street–or more specifically, public square–inside. This past week, French news outlets revealed that Apple’s next location is to open in Aix-en-Provence at the end of the year or in early 2013. The minimalist design, which is decidedly SANAA-esque, will seemingly incorporate the company’s patented glass technology, most recently implemented at the iconic 5th Avenue Cube where the original’s 90 panes of glass were reduced to just 15. According to IFO Apple Store, the store will replace the existing Office of Tourism building which now stands at the southern tip of the Place du General de Gaulle, while the site itself will be covered with a hard scape. The structure has been designed to meet all the latest earthquake measures, as per the city’s request. Three walls of glass will open onto the expansive plaza, while the fourth wall will face a row of newly built high-end shops to the south. An inlaid pool will extend to the west of the store. Explore the site here!

Urban Songline at Storefront for Art and Architecture

January 17, 2012

Storefront for Art and Architecture is a work of architecture that arguably has one agenda: to be a work of architecture (try saying that sentence ten times fast). It is the conscious experience of space it offers that makes up the bulk of its appeal, and because of this, seemingly every “normal” activity within its permeable concrete walls becomes somewhat difficult; crowded openings are hardly enjoyed without free wine, and lectures held there are usually muddled by the amplified sounds of downtown New York.

But what if Storefront’s exceptional space could double as something else, something non-spatial? Artist Allard van Hoorn provides one answer to the question in his first solo exhibition, Urban Songline. Van Hoorn has outfitted the iconic gallery designed by Steven Holl and Vito Acconci with crisscrossing strings tuned to different notes, forming a site-specific web that transforms Storefront’s unusual space into a large-scale musical instrument. The experience of the space—which has been doused in a coat of bright reddish orange undisclosed in these images—therefore translates into a separate, interactive acoustic experience. You can check out the opening reception for Urban Songline tonight at 7:00 pm!
