Our A+ trophy, designed by Snarkitecture!
NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s first design festival, is in high gear—establishing the Big Apple’s reputation as the Design Capital of the World. And Architizer is a part of it.
Bookended by the Frieze Art Fair at the beginning and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) near the end, NYCxDESIGN, which runs through May 21, brings together culture, education, commerce, and entertainment with hundreds of events ranging from exhibitions and installations to trade shows, talks, and open studios. But more than that, the festival aims to merge culture with commerce, and to bring design to all audiences.
That’s where Architizer comes in. As the world’s largest architecture website, Architizer is similarly committed to connecting design with the people by bringing architecture out of the echo chamber. Which is why we launched the Architizer A+ Awards, the biggest architectural awards program in the world, with 50+ categories and more than 200 jurors. Instead of celebrating one architect and making architecture into something rarefied and arcane, the A+ Awards celebrate the diversity of architecture around the globe, with entrants coming from more than 100 different countries. More after the jump!

Story by Karen Wong, New Museum deputy director and A+ Awards juror.
This past December, Snarkitecture made a splash at Design Miami with its audacious inflatable tubes, which created an oversized canopy at the entrance to the eighth annual international design fair. In the spring of 2011, Snarkitecture partners Daniel Ashram and Alex Mustenon caught my eye with their intervention “Dig!” at the Storefront for Art and Architecture. The designers filled the iconic wedge gallery with styrofoam, and then they, friends, and interlopers carved out crevices, rooms, and skylights to create a new typology of interior-igloo wonderland.
So in January, I approached Snarkitecture with an odd request: Could they bring their flair for the temporal to the New Museum’s Spring Gala? This benefit event attracts a discerning crowd of 600, which this year would include honoree Christian Marclay, as well as artists John Baldessari, Annie Leibowitz, George Condo, Cindy Sherman, Marilyn Minter, and John Waters. The venue: Cipriani Wall Street in Downtown New York City. Read more.

Architizer is hosting the world’s definitive architectural awards program, with 50+ categories and 200+ jurors. Alanna Okun, Assistant Editor at BuzzFeed Shift, will be covering relevant stories and news relating to the jury, the categories, and latest updates related to A+. See her previous post on Mitch Joachim here. To learn more about the awards, visit architizerawards.com.
Architizer’s upcoming A+ Awards are a study in intersections: between architecture and society, between design and function, between big, lofty theories and tactile real-world application. So why should the trophy, the very thing that all entrants are going before over 200 jurors in order to win, be any different? Continue.

Only a GIF can truly capture the most captivating moments from Design Miami. That’s why we’ve made five! Above is Booo’s Surface Tension Lamp (by FRONT), a light fixture that blows a continuous stream of incandescent bubbles which stopped visitors in their tracks and created a permanently hypnotized crowd surrounding the booth. Though almost no Design Miami-goer could look past Snarkitecture’s monolithic Drift pavilion, those who did were rewarded with leather-wrapped trees, 1 million Swarovski crystals, (purposely) broken furniture and more. We’ve rounded up our 10 favorite things we saw during the crazy, party-filled week. So click through to see our top picks, and don’t forget to share your favorites in the comments!

The eighth edition of Design Miami is officially open! This year, Snarkitecture has designed an inflatable pavilion, ”Drift,” that will greet visitors as they arrive at the event. Luckily for us, Architizer’s fearless leader Marc Kushner is there and has been gracious enough to send us a few shots, up close and personal with the enormous suspended structure. Last night, Brooklyn-based studio Snarkitecture celebrated the launch of its latest pop-up shop at Manhattan menswear store Odin. The single-room installation, a collaboration with designer Richard Chai and Palladium, is covered in floor-to-ceiling mirrors, providing a sharp contrast to Odin’s warm, eclectic decor. The effect is like an infinite, M.C. Esher-esque abyss of shoes (now, is there any better kind of abyss?) Read more!

There’s a story arc in 30 Rock where Tracy Jordan will not rest until he EGOTs—that is, wins all the top entertainment awards: the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. While the architecture equivalent of EGOTing might be less pronounceable (PritzRIpraeBAIA?), it’s also way less blingy than the diamond-encrusted EGOT necklace Tracy wears over his tracksuit. You take home the Pritzker or the AIA gold and you get… some medals. Where’s the fun in that?
OK, OK, international acclaim is probably not un-fun, as Glamour Woman of the Year Zaha Hadid could tell you. But! We’d still like to showcase some design awards with some heft and snazz of their own. To be totally humble, we’ll start with our own A+ Awards trophy, designed by Snarkitecture. It could be yours, but only if you enter by November 9! (Though we really don’t recommend wearing it around your neck.) Click through to see our other picks!

This week’s news about a conceptual design for an inflatable trampoline bridge in Paris had us buzzing with ideas for pneumatic high lines, tubular skyscrapers, and moon bounce roadways, where the chief means of locomotion would be, of course, somersaulting. While we didn’t get any of this into Rhino, architects are clearly already on the case. Snarkitecture recently unveiled their plans for inflatable “drift” pavilion for Design Miami. Raumlabor’s “Spacebuster” was exhumed from the studio archives and toured around Detroit last month. And Diller Scofidio + Renfro‘s “Bubble” expansion for the Hirshhorn Museum is set to blow up next year, making playful sport of Gordon Bunshaft’s Brutalist bunker in the process. There’s plenty more example, but you’ll have to click through to see them all.

This year marks the eighth edition of Design Miami, and it promises to be bigger than ever. The global design forum, which takes place in December, has upped the number of exhibiting galleries representing both new and iconic design works. And it’s expanded its geographic reach, featuring galleries from previously unrepresented countries and a larger focus on American design. To announce this super-sized theme, the New York-based firm Snarkitecture has created an enormous inflatable pavilion called Drift, which will greet visitors to the week’s events. Read more!
