It may be shocking that the Costa Concordia cruise ship that crashed and now floats alongside the island of Giglio is going to stay there. Forever. However, for architects, this floating mass (which can be seen from Google Maps!) offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to create a hybrid land-water space for visitors and locals. An international competition asked design firms to activate the half-sunken ship and coastline as a new public space, and four lucky winners have been announced. From an underwater mall to a scientific geological raft, it’s a good thing this boat isn’t going anywhere, because these ideas are truly transformative. Read more!

Earlier in the week we invited readers to enter our “Contemporary Classical: The Architecture of Andrew Skurman“ book giveaway. The deadline was last night, and we received a whopping response from our readers. Entrants were required to answer this question: In line with the Classical style, English-born Benjamin Henry Latrobe is often noted as the father of American architecture. In what city did America’s first architect design the country’s first Roman Catholic Cathedral?
For those still wondering, the answer is: The Baltimore Basilica, completed in 1821 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Today, we randomly selected one winner: Misty Owens of New Orleans, Louisiana. Congratulations, Misty! Your book is in the mail.

Last week, we invited readers to enter our “Designing Olympics“ book giveaway. The deadline was last night, and we received a great response, flooding our email accounts with submissions from around the globe. Entrants were required to answer this question: “As some know, architectural competition was once a part of the Olympic Games. What architect won a gold medal in architecture for his design of the Olympic Stadium used in the same Olympics Games?” For anyone still wondering, the answer is: Jan Wils, who won the gold medal in architecture for his design of the 1928 Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam.
Today, we randomly selected one winner: Luke Giaccio of Washington, D.C. Congratulations, Luke! Your book is in the mail.
For those who didn’t win this time around, don’t fret: We’ve just launched another book giveway! This time we’re offering a monograph featuring the work of the “unabashed classicist” Andrew Skurman. “Contemporary Classical: The Architecture of Andrew Skurman” is filled with photography and watercolor studies of houses, further illuminating each detail with “images and plans of their historical precedents taken from the architect’s vast library.” Read how to enter!

Like their western cousins IKEA, much-loved Japanese home furnishings store MUJI is expanding into prefab home design.
Back in 2009, the store commissioned the venerable Kengo Kuma to design two prefabricated homes, which could be customized, purchased, and assembled on site. Kuma’s elegant (and earthquake-proof) designs were made from an affordable industrialized kit-of-parts, meaning they had the potential to be marketed towards a larger audience.
It seems that MUJI has plans to do just that. Spoon & Tamago reports that the brand is holding a contest that offers one lucky winner the chance to live in Kuma’s Tree House (fully furnished with MUJI products) for two years – rent free. Read on.

We didn’t prepare a speech or anything, but… Ok, yes we did. Here goes.
We’re quickly closing in on a goal of ours here at Architizer: 10,000 registered firms.
To show our appreciation, we’re giving away a package of office-enhancing prizes to one firm that registers over the course of the next three days. It includes an iTunes gift card, a gaggle of new architecture and design books, and five desk makeovers from cheeky office suppliers Poppin. Deciding not to register could actually be interpreted as an act of aggression against your co-workers. Don’t be like that.
Here’s how this will work (since our home page features the number of firms prominently, we want to add a little mystery to the contest). Register your office by Wednesday, April 4. Share a link to your profile with us (tweet @Architizer or email us!). We’ll notify the winner by thursday.
Register here!
Each Desk Makeover Includes:
• 1 Tape Dispenser
• 1 Desk Set
• 1 Set of Inboxes
• 1 Ruler
• 1 Pair of Scissors
• 1 Box of Signature Pens
• 1 Box of Thin Highlighters
• 1 Box of Jumbo Highlighters
• 1 Box of Mechanical Pencils
• 1 Metal Pen

Bjarke Ingels and Daniel Kidd as Cloverfield King Kong and the Empire State Building.
Every profession has their own dorky way of celebrating Halloween. People in advertising dress up as the cast of Mad Men. Finance lawyers dress up as the people they evicted after locking them into unrealistic mortgages.
What those other professions don’t have, though, is the architect’s (a) creative impetus, (b) superior technical skill, and (c) all-consuming need to out-think their peers. Which makes the images from Storefront for Art & Architecture’s Critical Halloween benefit this past weekend a real delight to browse. Read on.

Out of the Real is a rich, illustrated survey of the innovative work carried out by the firm’s two principal architects, Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård.
The book includes photographs, plans and text on 28 different projects, details of the firm’s ongoing work, and an essay on their philosophy, their practice, and their place in the greater narrative of Swedish architecture. It is a handsome addition to any collection, and we have three copies to give away. Click to learn how you can win!
