Featured Project: A Striking Abode In The Belgian Forest By 51N4E

March 21, 2013

Project:  Huis aan’t Laar

Architect:  51N4E

Location:  Zoersel, Belgium

Located in the far north of Belgium, the ‘Huis aan t Laar’ (house in the woods) is aptly named. Set amid a young forest, the cube-like single-family dwelling stands in stark contrast to the organic vegetation—a beloved modernist aesthetic that is perpetually impressive. Large square windows pierce the dark volume, imparting a surprisingly light interior. One of the home’s sides opens onto a large patio through a full-length glazed wall.

Featured Project: Catskills Cabin By RES4

March 4, 2013

Project:  Catskills Suburban

Architect:  Resolution 4: Architecture

Location:  Palenville, New York

Located in a mountain forest clearing, the Catskills cabin combines radically different building traditions—labor intensive masonry alongside the modular construction logic employed by the architect. The structure is anchored by several large ledge-stone walls which also house several chimneys and an elegant contemporary hearth. The rest of the house is clad in red cedar, with an accessible roof deck on the upper floor.

Featured Project: Crimson Cabin In The Woods By SandellSandberg

February 22, 2013

treehouse

Ah, the cabin in the woods— a horror movie favorite! Cabins get a bad rep; they’re usually depicted as dusty, creaky, soily, mossy, not to mention preternaturally susceptible to all kinds of hauntings, murder, and mutilation.

This cherry-red cabin is none of these things, and a whole lot more. Designed by Stockholm-based architects SandellSandberg, the cabin is one in a series of five special edition treehouses at Treehotel, the quirky and surreal camp-in-the-woods getaway that’s tucked away in the forests of Swedish Lapland. If the house’s bright outer shell is loud, the interiors are restorative. The walls and pine floors are finished in a soothing palette of whites, grays, and light woods.

Featured Project: Human-Scale Honeycomb By AtelierD

February 5, 2013

Project:  K-abeilles Hotel for Bees

Architect:  AtelierD

Location:  Muttersholtz, France

This incredible multi-use pavilion provides shelter from the summer sun to visitors — and to wild bees. Often overlooked because of the fanfare surrounding their domesticated cousins, wild bees are integral to pollination worldwide. The pavilion presents two facades composed of hexagonal panels, each fit with a volume of different burrowing materials preferred by solitary native bees from densely packed tree branches to hollow bricks. The interior of the pavilion accommodates human occupation, complete with benches and storage cubbies built from the same hexagonal logic as the insect compartments outside.

Building Of The Day: Colorful Cabins With Wings By Max Pritchard Architect

September 20, 2012

Building: Lush Pasture Cabins

Architect: Max Pritchard Architect

Location: Bald Hills SA, Australia

Why We Like This:

Situated amid rolling hills with distant sea views, the Lush Pasture Cabins are a study in primary colors, which add drama and character to the small units. The design of the iconic winged roof makes each structure appear as if they are ready to take flight, while also serving an alterior purpose deeply rooted in marketing and sales. The dramatic views are emphasized by the wraparound windows, which are also equipped with motorized blinds that offer residents privacy if they so desire. Read the complete project description here.

Editor’s Pick: Not Your Average Ski Lodge

August 29, 2012

Building: Mountain Cabin in Laternser Valley
Architect: marte.marte
Location: Austria

Why We Like This: This proud, yet modestly scaled wintry cabin peers out from the edge of a ravine like the retro-modernist beacon that it is. The house is made of “carefully hewn” rough concrete walls, whose texture and light, ashy tones are complemented by warm oak doors and fittings. In spring, the white structure offsets the perennial green of the surrounding meadow, while in winter, the home becomes partly camouflaged by the snow-covered grounds, given up only by the pebbled shadows that cling to its textured exterior walls. The strategic massing and placement of the window voids create picturesque  panoramas from the interior, literally framed by oak trimming. Click through to see more of the project.

Cabin Study 11 by Drew Tyndell

Artist Drew Tyndell‘s new series of cardboard-thin assemblages are reminiscent of a child’s wooden puzzle toys, managing to successfully capture the natural beauty of both wood and architecture on a two-dimensional plane. Growing up with an architect-father, Tyndell learned the process of building homes at a young age and mines these experiences for the inspiration in his new work, ‘Cabin Series’.

Cabin Study 6 by Drew Tyndell

Through the integration of color and wood, Tyndell is able to emphasize the beauty of the natural materials and employs the inherent patterns present in the wood to add depth to each piece. The series, which includes 13 individual Cabin Studies as well as ‘Beach Houses’ along with a few more site specific pieces, makes use of color blocks and patterns to set the tone, location and even interject humor into each piece.

The artist is currently working in Atlanta, Georgia, while his work can be seen in various galleries across the country including the Compound Gallery in Portland, Oregon and the Poem88 Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.

Abandoned Missile Silo Hidden Beneath an Unassuming Adirondacks Cabin

January 10, 2012

With only 346 days left on the Mayan calendar, you’re probably looking for a cozy spot to ride out the “end days.” Boy, does Sotheby’s have a deal for you!

The auction house recently made news with an unusual listing for a luxury home built over a 1960s missile silo. The 185-foot-deep silo was abandoned after the end of the Cuban missile crisis, as were 12 such models built in the region. Discovered by pilot Bill Francisco and his cousin in the early 90s, the subterranean silo was transformed over a number of years into a livable space, complete with a simulated daylight system and marble bathroom. After completing the underground renovation, the duo built a 3-bedroom home and airplane runway over the silo’s entrance. Continue reading.
