For the first time in the history of the competition, Times Square Arts (the public art program of the Times Square Alliance) collaborated with Design Trust for Public Space in search for the winning proposal. Eight firms submitted design proposals, with Situ Studio’s Heartwalk winning the competition. Using wooden boards salvaged from Hurricane Sandy, the design was inspired by the “love that binds people together during trying times.” The planks lift from the ground to form an illuminated, heart-shaped court in the middle of Duffy Square. The enclosure allows visitors to literally stand in the heart of New York City— how romantic!
