Call For Entries: The 20th Annual Ceramics Of Italy 2013 Tile Competition

You don’t get to 20 years without doing something right. The 2013 Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is clearly doing something right. Over the last two decades, Ceramics of Italy (CoI) has forged a unique relationship with architects and designers, consistently championing their work through mass (i.e. global) publicizing and, just as important, cash prizes ($15,000 in all), not to mention (3) free trips to Italy. This year’s iteration is a milestone for the architecture and design community to be sure, but also another opportunity for practitioners to get their work out there. 2012 Residential Winner: Gramercy Townhouse by Fractal Construction

The competition celebrates North American designers and Italian ceramic tiles, and the creative pairing of the two. Past winners include architecture luminaries like Bernard Tschumi, Aldo Rossi, and Arquitectonica, as well as smaller to mid-size lesser-known firms that nevertheless churn out excellent work (see Biber Architects’ Montauk Residence or Hufft Projects‘ work below). Each of these architects have used Italian tiles to wonderful effect, and we’re willing to bet that there are plenty more who have too!

CoI is asking North America-based architects and designers to submit any projects—residential, institutional, or commercial/hospitality—completed between January 2008 and January 2013 that feature innovative tile design. The submissions will be judged on the merits of their design, the quality of their installation, their sustainable attributes, and their general integration with the architecture. Now, here’s where your ears will perk up. The firm or designer behind the winning projects will receive $4000 in cash plus a 5-day trip to Bologna, Italy and tickets to attend Cersaie 2013, the greatest ceramic tile expo on earth. The contractors/tile distributor team associated with each winner will get $1,000. Everyone wins!
