We, The People Petition Obama Administration For Death Star
December 17, 2012
Earlier in the year, we wrote how students from Lehigh University had estimated what it would actually cost to build a Death Star. The answer? “Roughly 13,000 times the world’s GDP,” though the figure was later contested by geeks all over the web. Well, accurate or not, those estimates might come in handy, if the White House chooses to consider a new petition to build a Death Star. Continue. The petition, which was posted to the White House’s “We the People” page last month, implores the Obama administration to build a Death Star identical to the one seen in Star Wars. The proposal demands that construction of the “space-superiority platform and weapon system” begin by 2016, citing the creation of innumerable jobs in construction and engineering; the advancement in space exploration; and, most importantly for Americans, a ridiculously beefed-up defense system that would immediately follow the ground(?)breaking. The initiative has garnered massive support, collecting over 25,000 signatures and thus, necessitating a state response to the pragmatic nature of the brief. That response— what will hopefully be a colorful riposte laden with references to Bothan spies, Sith lords, and the psycho-managerial complex that will run the ultimate weapon the galaxy has ever seen—has yet to come.
