Building Of The Day: Not Just ANY House By Spado Architects
November 28, 2012
Building: House ANY
Architect: Spado Architects
Location: Austria
Why We Liked This:
It was important to the architects that this not be just any old house, and they made sure to include several features that help distinguish it from its neighbors (the few that it has). For one thing, the house stands stranded in a meadow, surrounded by a rolling landscape that sets the perfect background for the architectural drama to unfold. Second, the home’s serpentine form, intriguing given the smallish scale of the project, is bookended by a grand exterior staircase and a retaining wall that holds up an elevated lawn. The two frame a long pool that emits an ethereal glow when lit at night that plays off the all-glass facade. The house cantilevers to the west in a bold gesture to the hilltops beyond, as if to assert itself to the surrounding valley. Take that, Nature!
