More Than A Painter: Check Out Dalí The Designer

December 5, 2012

Leda Chair

Dalí is known throughout the world as an impresario, iconoclast, and, of course, artist. Upon hearing his name, one pictures the twirled mustache, the eccentric gaze, and, maybe and only then, the sun-shelled, dripping clocks depicted in “Persistence of Memory”. What most people seem to forget, however, is that the Surrealist was much more than his mannered appearance or the fantastic nonsense of his canvases. Outside of the world of painting, Dalí built a repertoire of work ranging from film and literature to  fashion and furniture design, all of which can be seen at a new Dalí exhibition currently on display at the George Pompidou Centre (open until March 25, 2013). To commemorate the show, the My Design showroom in Paris will be exhibiting a line of Salvador Dalí-designed furniture, manufactured by BD Barcelona Design. Read more.

Dalilips Sofa

The exhibition at the Pompidou Centre is devoted to the work of the Spanish artist, featuring both known and unknown works in one of the largest restrospectives yet staged in Dalí’s name. While Dalí’s furniture work doesn’t figure much into the show—the only piece on view is the much-recognized Dalilips sofa—fans won’t have to venture too far to experience their own slide of the Surrealist life. The My Design showroom will also be exhibiting the BD manufactured Dalí pieces in celebration of the Pompidou retrospective. The sole manufacturer of Dalí’s designs, BD developed each piece in a marriage of functionality and beauty (because literal “arm” chairs are the definition of functional), careful to remain faithful to the artist’s original designs. The goal of the exhibition is to showcase these designs, as well as their accessibility to the common customer.
