Little People, Big World: Slinkachu Photographs Toy Figurines In Urban Landscapes

October 16, 2012

“Fantastic Voyage” by Slinkachu

London-based Slinkachu knows what it’s like to feel small and unrepresented in the vast, dense city. In his series “Little People,” the installation artist and photographer stages model-train-set figures interacting with the urban landscape — raking leaves, slam-dunking a basketball, sailing in a puddle — amplifying the sometimes terrifying and alienating experience of living in the city. He then photographs his scenes and leaves them there to weather elements, or to be trampled upon by an unwitting pedestrian. Read more!

“Dead Leaves,” Embankment, London

“Balancing Act,” Khayelitsha Township, Cape Town, South Africa

On his website, Slinkachu explains, “The scenes I set up … aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour. I want people to be able to empathize with the tiny people in my works.

The artist is currently touring Europe and the US promoting his most recent book, “Little People: Global Model Village,” a compilation of his most notable works. For more info, check out his website.

“Hanging On,” Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong

“Skyscraping,” Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York
