Building Of The Day: A High-Tech Urban Stage By gmp Architects
October 16, 2012
Building: Grand Theater Tianjin
Architect: gmp – von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects
Location: Tianjin, China
Why We Liked This:
The Future is here, in Tianjin. Or rather, the future as it looked in 1987. Kidding aside, the size and scope of the Grand Theater Tianjin should be commended, especially given how the project responds to its urban context. Situated at the heart of a new cultural center, the theater enjoys pride of place on the shores of an artificial lake, which heightens the whimsy of the already self-consciously zany forms. A collage of steel, glass, and stone, the building is crowned by a dramatic “floating”parasol roof that reinterprets the traditional Chinese use of the multiple eaves as a giant sail or aeronautic appendage. The stone plinth from which the structure rises steps down towards the water, creating a generous public space from where to observe the drama of the city beyond.
