The Architizer A+ Awards Launch Today!
October 9, 2012
Announcing the Architizer A+Awards from Architizer on Vimeo.
Architecture doesn’t need another award program stuck in the architectural echo chamber. Ugh. Enough with that echo chamber where architects tell other architects which architects they like. The industry needs to break out and the A+ Awards are designed to do it.
We decided to make the biggest, most visible, most awesome awards program that architecture has ever seen. First off we partnered with the producers of The Webby Awards – the ultimate annual internet awards. Then we invited 200+ jurors from fields that include architecture, but also product design, technology, and development (the people who actually hire architects!). 50+ categories designed for relevancy; an award trophy designed by Snarkitecture and fabricated by the same group that makes the Emmys; and a red carpet gala in New York City in May 2013.
The early entry deadline for the Architizer A+ Awards is November 9, 2012. Enter at architizerawards.com

Our diverse jury features architects, yes, but also cultural leaders, key developers, brand managers and other business luminaries that commission and support great architecture across the globe. These people include John Edelman of Design Within Reach, Jason Millhouse of the Ritz Carlton, Roy Kim of Extell Development, Charles Adler of Kickstarter, and Barry Bergdoll of MoMA, amongst others.
As for the architecture community, we’ve rounded up an impressive bunch: Steven Holl, Charles Renfro, Bjarke Ingels, Ben van Berkel, David Rockwell, and many more. Even Iwan Baan, the superstar photographer, will take a break from his round-the-world travels to serve as a juror.
We’re also psyched to be working with Recognition Media, the team behind the Webby Awards. This amazing, 16-year-old institution pioneered the recognition of excellence on the Internet. Neil Vogel, the founder, told us he’s been an Architizer fan since we launched three years ago, and he’s looking forward to creating “an iconic and modern award for architecture.” We intend for the A+ Awards to be a game-changing approach to the way the world’s best buildings and spaces are celebrated and recognized.
Determined to be inclusive, we’ve created a program that offers something for everyone. We have 50 categories broken into two sections: Typology Awards and Plus Awards. Typological categories, from residential to institutional, are open to buildings completed in the past three years. The Plus Awards, open to built and unbuilt work, highlight architecture’s role in serving the needs of contemporary society. Here’s where you’ll find more open-ended categories such as +Weather, +Economic Crisis, and +Urban Transformation.
Now, last off, about the trophy and awards gala. We’re thrilled to be working with Snarkitecture and the folks behind the MTV and Emmy awards to create the Architizer A+ Awards Statuette. Each winner will receive one of these bespoke showpieces during a glitzy party on May 16, 2013. No panel discussions! This will be a fun event to honor recipients. We’ll also be announcing a Firm of the Year, Building of the Year, and Client of the Year.
