As an act of both observation and experimentation, designers Guillaume Blaichet and Pierre Mourey have created an interactive glass lamp that allows users to experience firsthand the wonders of creating an “irreversible condition.” The globular Impact Lamp comes fully assembled, except for one piece. It is up to the user to complete the lamp by shattering the cullet drip to cover the electric components at the bottom of the lamp with glass shards. Read more.

The cullet drip is the waste glass used in glassmaking, with the remains left at the end of the blowpipe and quenched in cold water, which creates a thermal shock and, in turn, an instability of molecules within the glass. The lamp user shatters the cullet drip, thereby completing the aesthetic appeal of the lamp, and relying on gravity to cover the bottom of the sphere in glass dust.

Blaichet and Mourey explain: “Our project aims at sharing the feeling of surprise or even wonder we could have during this event, with the user. Thus, we propose a lamp which asserts itself as the medium of this purely descriptive and irreversible situation, as well as the long-lasting witness of the user’s experiment”
