Inspired by both traditional and contemporary design, Ryosuke Fukusada’s Wooden Light Bulb appears to be made of solid wood (it isn’t). To create the design, an LED device was ensconced within a thin wooden shell; an aluminum socket adds modern flair to the object. Read more.

The traditional Japanese technique of “ROKURO” allowed the designer to chip away at the wood, ultimately reaching the shell’s minimum thickness while still remaining functional. Once the LED device is activated, the bulb casts a fiery glow from within. There is no threat of fire considering LEDs produce very little heat, according to the designer.

Fukusada’s design, which is still in development, was recently announced as the winning entry in the Kyoto Renaissance design competition.
