Richard Meier Completes His First China Project, The Shenzhen Clubhouse

Constructed of various metals, an aluminum-framed curtain wall, and Corian panels, the new OCT Shenzhen Clubhouse is situated on an island in the middle of a harbor and provides guests with a host of luxury amenities. Designed by Richard Meier & Partners Architects, the structure is defined by the stark contrast that exists between the sweeping curves of the clubhouse in relation to the geometrically planar design of the nearby fitness center. Connected by an outdoor pathway, a balance is found between the contrasting scale and form of the two structures. Read more.

Spanning four years from inception to completion, the project was designed to house a restaurant, private dining suites, and a multi-purpose area, as well as recreational facilities, a small exhibition gallery, and the fitness center. A specific emphasis was placed on providing ample natural light. Shifting as the day wears on, the light moves around the facilities, animating interior spaces and working in harmony with the crisp surfaces and dramatic planes.

The OCT Clubhouse reflects a unique design while the architectural massing, the subtle folds, and the modulated proportions are evocative of the firm’s guiding principles.”
