The Plan As Generator Of…Movie Sets?

August 24, 2012

Films are inherently spatial and encompassing, despite the two-dimensional means with which we experience them. Reduced to the plane (or canvas) as they are, framing is paramount, a way to convey an architectonic world that’s at once fragmentary and enveloping. This becomes impossible without a plan–the “generator” as Le Corbusier opined–a grid on which to precisely plot the choreography of a scene. Yet, the particular content of the plan remains invisible to the audience. Until now! Read more.

Mehruss Jon Ahi + Armen Karaoghlanian have launched ‘Interiors Journal“, a monthly feature that examines one memorable movie set in detail, whether that be the glitzy, post-modern pastiche bedroom from “2001: A Space Odyssey”, the panic room in, er, “Panic Room”, or the boxing ring in “Raging Bull”. The study couples clear reductionist graphics with text analysis to offer a smart and concise view into each of the eight scenes the pair of designers have thus far completed.
