Design Jim’s Kitchen: The Honorable Mentions

We announced the winners of Design Jim’s Kitchen last week, but in the interest of showcasing more of the over 115 exceptional entries, we decided to post some of the Honorable Mentions. The designs were certainly interesting–each with innovative features and singular flourishes such as a mirror backsplash and mobile (“nomadic”) island unit–and definitely deserving of the commendations bestowed on them from our chief arbiter of taste and good living, Jim Richardson. His comments have been appended to the following projects. Continue.

Honorable Mention: Marco Bernadini, Anouchka Perilhou

“I was instantly drawn to this design’s clean lines as well as the mirrored backsplash making the space look much larger than it is, creating depth to the room and more light. I liked how the refrigerator and oven were placed on the entry wall, making more counter space as well as a mini-foyer for the front door. My one concern is the integration of the ceiling with the sprinkler system and beams in the space–a minor issue. It is a brilliant design.”

Honorable Mention: Damian Von Gemini

“This design is very clever. I really liked the storage cubes that disappeared in and out of view. I like the clean lines and how much space the design creates with everything put away. The concerns with this design are moving water from the sink, which is probably easily accomplished and would I really close up the kitchen completely given I really do cook at least one meal a day.”

Honorable Mention: Aétrangère + AIT

“By far, this design was the most outside-the-box of the contest. I love the sensual lines and curves of the entry foyer, the moving table and the curved countertop and galley. I like how smart the sink and cooktop are placed as well as the appliance column. I also like what an interesting space this design would create in an otherwise, square and boxy apartment. Only concerns with this design are if I can live with only two burners on the cooktop and would the closed in space feel a bit tight. But visually, it is stunning and inspired.”
