Ice fishing has held little to no appeal to me as someone who abhors any sustained activity in cold weather (including blogging inside chilly offices). But this foreign pursuit has recently stepped up its allure with the advent of Norwegian design studio Gartnerfuglen’s mobile ice fishing hut. “Unavailability” is a folded timber structure that can be assembled and disassembled with ease by two people. The beauty and simplicity of its form lies in the malleable chicken-wire-clad walls and roof of the hut, which can be filled with lake water to form thin walls of ice. Thus, the portable fishing hut is built anew each time it is needed. The downside? There’s only enough room for one, so whoever helped you set up shop will have to leave you in solitude.
