The Cure for the Common Continuing Education Lecture
February 22, 2012
The quest for CES credits may sometimes seem like a never-ending cycle of programming – of which little seems to address broader challenges facing the architects today. Here are a few, just off the top of our heads: Can I use social media to raise money for our project? Should I be concerned about image reproduction and copyright practices in the age of the Internet? Can I really find clients online? How should my office be using social media to promote our work in a meaningful (non-time wasting) way? In short, is the online world really as much as an asset to my business as everyone claims?
The answer to that last one is undoubtedly “yes,” with a caveat: the internet can transform your office’s public profile, when used correctly. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to a day of CES learning that will include a dialogue speaking directly to all these questions, between two architects who have leveraged the internet as a design tool with great success: HWKN principle and Architizer co-founder Marc Kushner and Playlab, Inc. co-founder and +Pool creator, Archie Lee Coates IV. More information after the jump.
HWKN’s winning proposal for WENDY in the MoMA PS1 courtyard.
Marc and Archie’s panel dialogue is part of the third annual Educational Forum for Design Professionals on March 13th, sponsored by the Architects & Designers Building and the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) and organized by ERD Consulting. The day will start with great educational programs in the morning and end with the panel and a cocktail party that evening – worth up to six AIA, IDCEC, and NKBA credits.
Marc’s office, HWKN, just won MoMA PS1’s 2012 Young Architects Program with a show-stopping “proactively sustainable” scheme called WENDY (check out our post on it here). WENDY will be built over the next few months in MoMA PS1’s courtyard, and set the stage for the Musuem’s popular series of concerts and events come summertime. HWKN has a history of using emergent technology to engage the public through design – not to mention founding Architizer in 2009.
Meanwhile, Archie is a co-founder at one of the most exciting young offices in the city. Playlab, Inc., along with Family New York, made waves (so to speak) last year with their proposal for +Pool, a plus-sign-shaped pool floating in New York’s East River. Their radical proposal – which five years ago, would have been written off as theoretical – is currently being tested after being funded online by Kickstarter, the crowdsourced funding application. Playlab is pushing the boundaries of the scope of the typical architecture practice, developing websites, mobile applications, and public interventions in addition to their built work.
Come out and “talk internet” with us! We hope you’ll join in the dialogue (and the subsequent party) on March 13th at the A&D Building. Full information about registration can be found here.
