‘Bloom Skin’: Issey Miyake’s Dancing Window Display

The window display is a form of architecture that relies heavily on first impressions. Its three-dimensional design seeks to craft an extraordinary image, one that is likely more fantastical and alluring than the goods it proffers behind its panes. It is no wonder then that during the holiday season, retailers go so far as to enlist pop image-makers like Lady Gaga to deck out their storefronts with dizzying installations.
But if anyone knows the power of minimalist design, it’s probably the Japanese. For Issey Miyake’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection of ELTTOB TEP, the fashion designer called upon visual design studio WOW to create a mesmerizing window display called ‘Bloom Skin’ out of a single piece of organdy fabric, the same ultra light fabric used throughout the new collection. WOW installed and aligned 8 computer-controlled fans before the store windows and programmed them to rhythmically turn on and off. The wispy organdy fabric, in turn, hovers above the fans and dances in ethereal, wavelike motions. Its simple concept, relevant use of materials and incorporation of motion make ‘Bloom Skin’ a fitting window display to express Miyake’s innovative line.
