Stained Glass Windows for Alternative Saints
February 3, 2012
We recently came across the work of illustrator Neal Fox, who has taken a high Gothic architectural tradition and dragged it through the detritus and broken glass of pop culture, literally. Far from illustrating and illuminating stories of saints and refracting them onto sacred space, his gallery-bound stained glass windows glorify the cult of personality that saturates daily life today by crafting graphic portraits of alternative figures like Hunter S. Thompson, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Billie Holiday.
These are not your typical saints, to say the least, and symbols of their unorthodox martyrdom range from guns, booze, and drugs to dismembered body parts, sexual escapades and illegitimate children, all pieced together using traditional stained glass techniques. The windows undoubtedly draw inspiration from Gilbert and George but are unique in their portrayals of figures whose stories of personal demise are a source of strength today.
