The infinite void that is the screen of your iPad just became that much more fascinating: renowned Japanese photographer Hoichi Nishiyama has just released a photographic essay that journeys deep underground into Japan’s tunnels, and these breathtaking feats of engineering are available to explore as a special photography book available for iPads.

Thirty unpublished works accompanied by detailed text shed light on the mammoth projects that take place beneath our feet. Ominous views of subterranean holes and immense tunnel boring machines provide a glimpse of the profound scale, power and complexity of these projects. Divorced from the pages of a traditional book, these photographs somehow fit wonderfully with the formlessness of their virtual presentation, inviting the mind to bore infinitely further beyond the vanishing points of Nishiyama’s grand compositions.
