Puzzles for Living
January 24, 2012
Ikea may be extolling the virtues of its flatpack boxes for its annual sale, but designer Konstantin Achkov has taken the flatpack to another level with his “Puzzles for Living.” A recent exhibition at Gallery Credo Bonum in Sofia, Bulgaria displayed a series of 18 mm beech plywood templates for chairs that can be assembled like three-dimensional puzzles. More after the jump.
The parts and their joints were shown in the gallery assembled into their functional forms and disassembled into vertical displays of their anatomies. Seen in juxtaposition, the designs truly become puzzles, challenging the viewer to mentally piece the parts into a whole. These artisanal expressions of mass production betray the influence of Eastern European avant-garde, interestingly in both sculptural and printed forms.
