In 1951, Charles and Ray Eames introduced their wire chair into the world, presenting a lightweight, twisted metal counterpart to their plywood and molded plastic furniture. The clean, streamlined geometries of the wire chair have made it a staple in every Herman Miller catalogue, but just as the Rietveld Chair can afford some playful remixing, the Eames wire chair is ripe for creative variation. Artist Akira Ishikawa has applied basic knitting and weaving techniques to soften the post-industrial aesthetic of the wire chair and create colorful one-of-a-kind pieces. The icon of mass-produced, mid-century design is suddenly transformed into a cozy, handmade emblem of the DIY movement.
