In what might be the most endearing video of the year–up there with the likes of playful webcam-using grandparents , talking twin babies, and cat hugging — Pritzker laureate and world-renowned architect Alvaro Siza sings along to the Beatles as he works quietly in his office, calmly shuffling trace paper and adjusting flat edges as he goes about revising plans. The song playing the background is Paul McCartney’s “When I’m Sixty-four,” a winking account of old age and a thoroughly ironic slice of nostalgia for earlier, more romantic times–the details of which unfaze Siza, who seems content to hum the melodic line and mumble the refrain without becoming too distracted by the tune’s underlying issues of uncertainty. The song’s schmaltzy arrangements (clarinets + electric guitars!) animate the architect’s minimal movements and subtle genuflections and perfectly suit the casual, breeziness with which the whole scene unfolds. Just look at that face!
