This morning at 10 AM, the new and improved Apple Cube was opened to the public. As we reported in August, construction began in June to disassemble the original Apple flagship store, designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, and replace it with a simplified copy. This second Cube has reduced the number of the former’s glass panes from 90 to 15 using innovative glass technology–and at a cost of a reported $6.6 million–that embeds joints within the panes themselves. As VentureBeat‘s photographs show, the new store is slightly jarring, in that the tectonic logic of the original has been erased in favor of a seamless envelope that alludes to Apple’s celebrated products. While the store’s trademark staircase and interiors remain intact, Apple has made subtle changes to the plaza, installing new water drains and pavers. More images (and video) after the jump!
