At Night, the Cities Come Out to Play
October 28, 2011
These mesmerizing long exposure photos by Terence Chang capture the take-off and landing patterns of airplanes against the urban night sky. In these photographs, wispy trails of light snake across an inky backdrop, as if the city were at play while its inhabitants slumber. Surely this is light pollution at its very best. More after the jump.
The photos in the series were taken between June 13, 2008 and April 16, 2010, during which time Chang has seemingly mastered the art of long exposure airport photography. In just 16 photos, he presents a dazzling variety of views, ranging from remote scenes of jets painting the night sky, to more intimate views of white streaks whizzing past docked boats and crisscrossing over urban infrastructure. Through Chang’s lens, these typically somber scenes become infused with a sense of thrill and wonder to create magical portraits of the city at night.
