Simulacrum, Swimming Pool!
October 27, 2011
We’re kicking off this rainy New York morning with a trip to the pool: artist Leandro Elrich has created a spectacular installation at the 21st Century Museum of Art at Kanazawa Japan simulating the inside of a swimming pool.
According to Feel Desain, visitors are invited to enter an empty space surrounded by aquamarine walls and stand beneath a 10-cm layer of water suspended over transparent glass. With sun shining directly through, this unusually hermetic space puts on a mesmerizing light show of liquid shadows. Fresh from the Carsten Höller retrospective at the New Museum, we are pining for more relational art to stun our senses, and this looks slightly more amenable than the clothing-optional Sensory Deprivation Tank.
