“Emerald River” Offers Brits Bizarre, Truvia-Sponsored Boatride
August 2, 2011
After a Monday full of horrible, awful news, this bizarre project — from British jellymongers (yep) Bompas & Parr — strikes a curative balance between escapism and chartreuse.
The “culinary architect” duo turned the roof of the staid Selfridge’s department store into a 400-square-meter emerald-green boating lake. Visitors were invited to “take to the seas” on the roof of the London store in antique rowboats, while enjoying what sounds like a very fancy selection of distillations, indeed: cocktails were mixed “by the Experimental Cocktail Club, the Rare Tea Company served quintessentially British teas and Caravan poured out rich coffees.” It’s been a monster hit with the Brits, who are prone to such flights of fancy snapped up all the tickets to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-esque rooftop before the end of opening day. Disappointingly, the “emerald oasis” was created for the UK launch of artificial sweetener Truvia, but then again, what fanciful design intervention doesn’t have a corporate sponsor anymore?
