Building Fashion Returns This Fall – Here Are the Winners
August 1, 2011
Bloggers have speculated before about what Lady Gaga means for architecture, but this may be the first instance of an architect actually speaking the language of Gaga.
Today BOFFO (in partnership with Architizer) announced the winners of Building Fashion 2011, the annual competition that pairs five young designers with five architecture firms to create pop-up retail spaces. The first pairing will bring together Nicola Formichetti, Fashion Director for Lady Gaga (as well as Creative Director for Mugler as well as fashion stylist to Uniqlo, MAC and V Magazine) with Gage/Clemenceau Architects. The renderings show a crystalline cocoon of shattered mirror, adopting the formal language of Formichetti’s deconstructed and highly engineered garments.

Last year’s Building Fashion was an incredibly exciting way to pass the fall (almost like watching five real-life episodes of Project Runway, but with higher stakes, more architecture and fewer tears), and this season’s installation proposals seem to promise at least as much drama. Every two weeks — starting in September — each of the five teams will receive $20,000 to build out a retail space at 57 Walker Street in Tribeca. Head over to BOFFO for more details – we’ll be posting updates as the building kicks into high-gear later this month. Congratulations to all the winners.
