Pop Up Chapel: the Competition
July 12, 2011
On a blazingly hot day two weeks ago, writer/director Bex Schwartz and software developer Josh French floated through our door, fresh from a meeting with the NYC Parks Department. The topic of that meeting? Pop Up Chapel, an initiative that Schwartz and French (along with Tyler Coates, Jen Carlson and Lindsay Robertson) cooked up just days before, the night the Marriage Equality Act passed in the New York State Senate. As we sat down with the duo to discuss their proposal, we realized they were planning what is destined to become a hallmark event in New York history. Click through.
Their plan is equal parts lovely and extraordinarily audacious: build two temporary wedding chapels in Central Park, where as many couples as possible will be married, for free, on July 30th. Cupcakes, photography, styling, and officiant included. The outpouring of support and excitement that’s trailed the launch of Pop Up Chapel shows just how damn excited New Yorkers are about the passage of the bill, but Pop Up Chapel is still lacking one thing (two, actually): the chapels themselves, which must be easily constructed, relatively inexpensive, and most importantly, beautiful.
That’s where we came in. After hosting several competitions for temporary structures (see: Sukkah City), we’re happy to be hosting the a rapid-fire competition to design the spaces in which the first same-sex couples in New York will be legally married.
So, here’s our challenge for you. Design a venue for this historic celebration — to be built at Merchant’s Gate in Central Park on July 30th, 2011 (yes, this July 30th). The jury will select two of the entries, and fund their construction. All of the competition details are here. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines Rhino.
