+Pool: A pool for you, me, and everyone we know (not to mention “your girlfriend, your boss, your bartender, your tamale guy, and your other girlfriend”).

The proposal for a floating, plus-shaped pool in New York’s East River made waves last summer when it was still just a cool, blue sparkle in the eye of designers Dong-Ping Wong, Archie Lee Coates IV and Jeffrey Franklin. This summer, the trio is launching a plan to carry the proposal through to completion. That means research (according to their plan, the pool will filter river water), implementation studies (imagine the red tape!), and design development (all three are architects).

If all goes as planned, we could be riding chillwaves off the starboard bow of the +Pool as soon as next summer. With your help, that is! Click through.

The trio launched a Kickstarter for +Pool yesterday (check out our EIC Kelsey Keith representing in the video), and in less than 24 hours, it’s already on fire. Which is not to say their goal is a sure thing: it will be hugely expensive to research (much less build!) the project, so head over to Kickstarter and get your Web 3.0 on.

We write about a lot of projects over here, but this one is special. The trio is evidence of a new wave of young architects and designers collaborating directly with city governments to affect change, rather than toiling away in obscurity on projects that bring little joy, or change, to the general public. It’s a sea change (zing), and anyone interested in better, smarter, funner cities should go throw cash at them.
