Top Ten: The Best Glass
May 16, 2011
We don’t usually ruminate on a specific material, unless it’s something really groundbreaking. But today, a NYT piece on the tribulations of the glass base of 1 World Trade Center got us thinking about glass. As the article reports, the 185-foot-tall concrete base of the building is being disguised by the architects with 2,000 clear prismatic glass panels (the piece details some of the problems with the scheme). What jumped out, to us, was how important the architects saw glass as being, in their quest to create an interface between the public and the building itself.
