NYC Housing Projects Getting Neon Facelift?
May 10, 2011
The past few years have seen a surge of interest in the favelas of Brazil: there are countless ethnographies, documentary films, and design projects that aim to raise awareness of the challenges and struggles of their inhabitants.
Dutch artists Haas&Hann, visiting Rio six years ago, decided to take a more active approach to engaging the favela: color. They’ve been working in Brazil ever since, hemming together a hybrid art/design/urban planning/awareness project founded on participation and action (they say “we invite you to come, learn from Rio and act.”).

“Painting Urbanism: Learning from Rio,” a show of their work and workshop focusing on the pair’s approach as an urban intervention, opens this Friday at Storefront.
