Announcing: Audi Urban Future

May 3, 2011

Festival of Ideas for a New City: it’s almost here! We’ve been prepping you with things to do (projection-mapping on the facade of the New Museum) and people to see (Rem Koolhaas giving the keynote speech tomorrow evening), and now we’re going to fill you in on an extra special project we’ve been working on.

Architizer is curating the Audi Urban Future Initiative, a long-term project that examines how mobility, urban living and the role of the transportation will change in the coming years. The 50-foot architectural model will be wrapped around the Openhouse Gallery all weekend, from May 7-9.  Five emerging NYC-based architects will present concepts of a futurist Manhattan as part of the New Museum’s first-ever festival.

Click through for first of a weeklong preview of the model being built!

“Audi Urban Future: Project New York” envisions a new city based on the award-winning concepts from the inaugural Audi Urban Future Award – hosted at the 2010 Venice Biennale – including the winning entry by J. MAYER H. Architects from Berlin. To bring to life these concepts in New York City, five practices (LEONG LEONG, Matter Practice, Abruzzo Bodziak Architects, labDORA and THEVERYMANY) have applied these concepts to a 3D interactive map of Manhattan.

Below, the first stages of the model being assembled as a secret location in Brooklyn:

The 50-foot interactive model of Manhattan in 2030 will be on display at Openhouse Gallery (201 Mulberry St. in New York City) on Saturday, May 7 from Noon to 7 p.m., and Sunday, May, 8 and Monday, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. To find out more about the Audi Urban Future Initiative, visit www.audi-urban-future-initiative.com.

And stay tuned to Architizer for tomorrow’s construction photos. We’ll be revealing more of the finished model as the week progresses!
