Rising Currents at MoMA
March 24, 2010
Last evening was the preview reception for the Rising Currents: Projects for New York’s Waterfront exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The program, which is a collaboration between MoMA and PS1 Contemporary Art Center:
Address[es] one of the most urgent challenges facing the nation’s largest city: sea-level rise resulting from global climate change. Though the national debate on infrastructure is currently focused on “shovel-ready” projects that will stimulate the economy, we now have an important opportunity to foster new research and fresh thinking about the use of New York City’s harbor and coastline. As in past economic recessions, construction has slowed dramatically in New York, and much of the city’s remarkable pool of architectural talent is available to focus on innovation.
It is more or less the first time a museum has become an enabler and participant in a contemporary design problem. Five firms were asked to participate in open studios at PS1 to design for the future: ARO, Scape, Matthew Baird Architect, LTL Architects and nARCHITECTS all contributed unique designs.
The preview last night heralded the start of the exhibition, which runs through October 10th on the 3rd floor of MoMA.
