Video of Ito’s Mediatheque During Quake Released
March 15, 2011
You may have noticed that many architects, in the days since the earthquake, have taken up Toyo Ito’s 2001 Mediatheque as a kind of symbol of the destruction in Japan. This is unsurprising, since we tend to gravitate towards what we know and care about when attempting to process or understand difficult information and news. It was unclear whether the building was even still entact until yesterday - you’ll remember that the building’s tree-like tubes were a remarkable and unique structural experiment.
But last night, the LA Times Culture Blog posted video from the interior of the Mediatheque taken during the earthquake, and it looks like it’s largely unharmed.
A small (tiny, actually) victory, amidst the mass death and destruction that Japan faces. But a happy ending to at least one story today. [via LA Times Culture Blog]
