Geodesic Redux
February 11, 2011
Nice to see that the geodesic dome doesn’t represent the failure of a counterculture to everyone: Whitepod is an award-winning Swiss eco-tourism company that maintains heir geodesic hotel “rooms,” which can each sleep four people, overlooking Lake Geneva. Founder Sofia de Meyer hopes that the low-profile, white-in-winter, green-in-summer domes will intrude less on the experience of the landscape than permanent guest cottages would.
Whitepod is predicated on the idea that luxury design and sustainability are not mutually exclusive – that in fact, they can inform and engage each other. Materials are locally sourced, and wood and water is obtained through socially responsible channels – the company markets itself as a hotel experience for a new breed of tourist.
We mostly want to see the sections – the geodesic domes of the 60s and 70s were notorious for being leaky and freezing, so we’re curious about how this updated model functions.
