Lladró is a Spanish ceramics company known for its over-the-top, hand-painted creations in the vein of vases, urns, and figurines. So what is doing in one of the hippest design galleries in Barcelona?
That would be its contemporary design-driven lab, Lladró Atelier, at work. Led by interior and industrial designer Jaime Hayón (you may recall his recent assistance on the Groninger Museum), the smaller team focuses on modern silhouettes in place of fusty ornamentation. Take, for example, its newest line which debuted two weeks ago at Maison et Objet in Paris. Metropolis is a series straight out of a Precisionist painting — block skyscrapers with geometric patterns and a muted, matte finish.
